THERMOGRAPHIC SURVEYS

THERMOGRAPHIC SURVEYS

Check the safety of your electrical systems without disruption

Bureau Veritas offers independent thermographic surveys for electrical installations in all environments.

Electrical system failures such as failure of electrical insulation, terminals and related components can lead to fires, excessive power usage and expensive unscheduled outages. They can also pose a risk to employees. If serious failure occurs, workers could be exposed to live electrical circuits.

Thermographic inspections – or infrared inspections – help reduce this risk by assessing the thermal condition of components to immediately identify any faults. This non-destructive test method can detect poor connections, unbalanced loads, deteriorated insulation or any other potential problems so that you can take action to improve safety and prevent unnecessary costs from escalating.

  • HOW DO THERMAL IMAGING CAMERAS WORK?

Thermal imaging cameras use advanced infrared technology to look for ‘hot spots’ caused by electrical loads, such as a loose connection, which can occur in terminations, protective devices, cables or any other point where there is a joint or termination. If the heat is not controlled it can rise to dangerous levels and create fires.

This non-intrusive technology sees faults that the human eye cannot see within distribution boards, control panels, electric motors and any component using electricity. All without the need to turn the power off.

Special training is required to use thermal imaging cameras. If cameras are used incorrectly for inspections, it could lead to exposure to ‘live’ electrical parts at dangerous voltages. This is why many companies tap into specialist expertise from an independent inspection partner like Bureau Veritas.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF THERMOGRAPHIC SURVEYS

Thermographic surveys are an approved test method in IET Guidance Note 3. Benefits include:

  • Identify incorrect selection and installation
  • Identify electrical and physical defects before costly unscheduled outages
  • Reduce electrical shock and fire risk
  • Meet current HSE guidance on electrical safety
  • Enable increased output
  • Non-intrusive technology to minimise disruption
