Circular Economy

End-to-end waste management advisory and assurance services including independent verification of your waste data.

Waste is costly and increasingly difficult for businesses to manage, but with ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) high on the agenda, getting it right can deliver significant benefits.

corporate waste legislation

The regulatory requirements and best practice approaches for waste are complex and constantly changing. Requirements include implementing the waste hierarchy appropriately, managing waste paperwork, implementing audit trails and appropriately managing waste with licenced contractors. Developing an effective waste strategy is vital, particularly as regulation and policy increasingly encourages progress towards a circular economy.

In contrast, failure to manage your waste effectively could lead to environmental, human and economic impacts, reputational damage and the risk of fines or penalties. Bureau Veritas supports with a wide range of services to help manage your obligations and support implementation of a best practice waste management programme.

OUR WASTE Management SERVICES

Our services span verification, certification, compliance, processes, strategy and training – giving a complete solution whether you are navigating complex compliance, taking steps to minimise your waste or embracing the circular economy with advanced strategies.

Waste verification, certification and compliance

  • Legal Register development and compliance assessments

In a complex regulatory landscape, you need to be able to understand applicable legislative requirements and ensure compliance is achieved before optimising your waste management systems. For clients just beginning their zero waste journeys, Bureau Veritas can support with:

    • Development of legal registers, covering relevant regulations including those related to non-hazardous and hazardous waste and wastewater.
    • Gap assessments of client documentation and processes against legislation to understand existing levels of legal compliance and identify any areas of risk.
  • GAP ANALYSIS & MATURITY ASSESSMENTS

Our specialists conduct gap and maturity assessments against varied waste practices, requirements and standards, including:

    • Zero waste to landfill
    • TRUE zero waste standard
    • Waste management legislation and compliance
    • Waste management best practice (hazardous and non-hazardous waste)
    • Circular economy (including sustainable procurement)
    • Related ISO standards such as 14001 (Environmental Management Systems) and circular economy (coming in 2024)
  • Zero waste to landfill

Zero waste to landfill is when all waste materials and products generated by an organisation are diverted away from landfill to treatment processes further up the waste hierarchy. Whether you are using zero waste to landfill as a goal to strive towards at the beginning of your waste journey, or you have recently achieved this, our team supports with:

    • Analysis of client waste streams and diversion rates.
    • Verification of zero waste to landfill claims.
  • TRUE Zero Waste

TRUE is a world-class zero waste standard driven by the US-based Green Building Council Inc (GBCI). The standard takes a whole system, full lifecycle approach that aims to transform the way materials flow through society, leading to zero waste. It advocates for the adoption of sustainable resource management and waste reduction practices which promote the redesigning of resource lifecycles so that material inputs are reduced and all products are reused.

With the support of an in-house accredited TRUE advisor, we can help clients with:

    • TRUE zero waste gap assessments (remote and/or site visits)
    • Advisory support for development of a roadmap to achieving certification
    • Support with pre-certification and/or certification
  • Mobilisation and certification support

If you are aiming to achieve world-class standards such as zero waste to landfill or TRUE certification, we offer mobilisation and certification support including:

    • Employee and leadership waste-related training.
    • Assessments to understand full lifecycle of materials in and waste out of a given facility or company supply chain.
    • Creation of zero waste policies and procedures (including sustainable procurement).
    • Advisory support and evidence-gathering for TRUE pre-certification or certification.

FAQs

  • WHY DOES WASTE MANAGEMENT MATTER?

Complex and evolving legislation regularly places new obligations on businesses across all sectors to measure, categorise, minimise and report on their waste. With increased focus on ESG performance, waste plays a key part in demonstrating commitment to environmental responsibility.

  • WHAT WASTE REGULATIONS AND LEGISLATION DO BUSINESSES NEED TO BE AWARE OF?

The Waste (England and Wales) Regulations 2011 (as amended) implement the revised EU Waste Framework Directive 2008/98, which sets requirements for the collection, transport, recovery and disposal of waste. Other regulations set specific obligations relating to different types of waste (including hazardous waste or electrical) and for specific processes, such as packaging production, including but not limited to:

    • The Hazardous Waste (England and Wales) Regulations 2005 (as amended)
    • Producer Responsibility Obligations (Packaging Waste) Regulations 2007 (as amended)
    • The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Regulations 2013 (as amended)
    • The Packaging (Essential Requirements) Regulations 2015
  • WHAT IS A CIRCULAR ECONOMY APPROACH TO WASTE?

With dwindling resources, a circular economy approach aims to  make the most of available resources, minimise waste and extend the lifecycle of materials and waste. In a circular economy, products and materials are reused, repaired, refurbished and recycled for as long as possible, thus extending their lifespan and reducing the amount of waste generated.
