Inventory Hazardous Materials

INVENTORY OF HAZARDOUS MATERIALS

LEADING THE WAY IN MANAGING HAZARDOUS MATERIALS

The Inventory of Hazardous Materials (IHM) is a regulatory requirement within the Shipping Industry for the control of hazardous materials on board ships in order to comply with both the Hong Kong Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships, and its EU equivalent, the Ship Recycling Regulation (EU SRR).

These hazardous materials include asbestos, ODS, PCBs, TBTs, PFOS, PBDEs, lead and mercury compounds, and radioactive substances.

Bureau Veritas works alongside owners and operators to help them navigate the challenges of optimising and simplifying late-life operations and decommissioning efficiently, safely and sustainably. Bureau Veritas consider IHM a crucial process to be utilised during the decommissioning of offshore and onshore assets in the energy sector when identifying and managing hazardous and recyclable materials. For assets near the end of their operational life, adopting an effective IHM process addresses the varying dismantling and disposal challenges faced. An effective IHM process will ensure compliance with environmental regulations whilst also incorporating sustainability and Circular Economy principles - minimising environmental impact, reducing the risk of hazardous material exposure, and optimising resource reuse, repurposing, and recycling.
