14th May 2008 - 50 Best Green Companies selected through criteria developed by Bureau Veritas.

The top performers in The Sunday Times ‘50 Best Green Companies’ list were announced on the 11th May, selected through methodology developed with Bureau Veritas.

Coffin makers JC Atkinson & Son grabbed the top spot, followed by construction company Carillion in second place and Cooperative Financial Services in third. The Green List has been compiled over the last six months, with over 80 companies assessed using methodology developed with Bureau Veritas.

The list is the only one of its kind open to both large and small companies, and the only benchmark that takes into account employee opinion, which comprised 30% of the total results.

Companies were required to complete two sections including an employer part, examining management policies and corporate attitudes, and an employee survey that tested the staff engagement against those policies. Companies had to score highly in both the employee and employer sections in order to enter the Top 50.

Ken Smith, Business Director for Environmental Management, Sustainability and Risk at Bureau Veritas UK & Ireland, comments:

"We wanted to develop a questionnaire that enabled any organisation, big or small, to participate and we believe that the Green List will become one of the leading comparators and benchmarks of environmental performance for UK organisations. Combining employee perception with management responses is a powerful tool that will enable organisations to make significant step changes in improvement."
