ECODESIGN FOR ENERGY USING PRODUCTS AND ENERGY RELATED PRODUCTS
Compliance solutions for the Ecodesign Directive for energy using products and energy related products
Download the service sheet in PDF
The EU Eco-design Directive was adopted in 2005. It establishes a framework under which manufacturers of energy-using products will, at the design stage, be obliged to reduce the energy consumption and other negative environmental impacts occurring throughout the product life cycle.
A revised Directive (2009/125/EC), which entered into force on the 20th November 2009, extends the scope of the existing Directive by covering in principle all energy-related products. The Directive will have a major impact on the way you design products and demonstrate compliance.
PRODUCTS COVERED BY THE ECO-DESIGN DIRECTIVE
- Energy using products (EuPs): products which use, gener¬ate, transfer or measure energy (e.g. electricity, gas, fossil fuel), including consumer goods such as boilers, computers, TVs, washing machines, light bulbs and industrial products such as transformers or industrial fans.
- Other energy related products (ERPs): products which do not necessarily use energy, but have an impact on energy consump¬tion (direct or indirect) and can therefore contribute to saving energy, such as windows, insulation material or bathroom devices (e.g. shower heads, taps).
Energy consumption testing & LCA – Environmental Impact Assessment
Commonly referred to as a Product Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), an Environmental Assessment quantifies the environmental footprint of a product – including its energy consumption. It can also highlight the improvement if compared against an industry benchmark or a competing product / technology.
The LCA is achieved through the EIME (Environmental Improvement Made Easy) software; software widely accepted and referenced by a large number of environmental government agencies around the world.
