Career Story: Lee Perry, Health & Safety Consultant

Name: Lee Perry

Job Title: Health & Safety Consultant

Location: Manchester

Can you give a brief summary of what your role as a health and safety consultant for Bureau Veritas entails?

I have been with Bureau Veritas for just over a year now as a health and safety consultant, and my role involves working with several large companies in a wide range of manufacturing sectors. I provide support for our clients with any Health & Safety (H&S) services they may require. This can range from consulting, auditing, fire risk assessment and regulatory assistance, to legal compliance and accident investigations.

Another element of my role is acting as technical lead for H&S consultancy, providing support on technical and complex queries. I am also heavily involved, alongside the Business Division Manager, in the commercial development of our team.  As such I can often be found heavily involved in our tender submissions and also project managing compliance projects across large, often multi-site, portfolios.

Within my role, I regularly provide second party auditing services such as legal compliance audits and auditing against a client’s own standard. I also deliver training for clients, typically training their employees on aspects of their own management systems, with a particular emphasis on control of maintenance operations.

Health and safety is quite a broad service area, can you summarise what services are on offer within the H.S.I division?

Bureau Veritas has a broad H&S specialist team which meets all of an organisation’s H&S requirements. For instance, we have a team that specialises in fire and can carry out fire risk assessments, fire safety consultancy, fire management and fire training. We also have an asbestos team that specialises in asbestos detection and management. Then there is an Indoor Air and Water Quality (IAWQ) team which focuses on air and water quality, including Legionella monitoring and management. As a division, we specialise in H&S management across the board and support our clients to achieve and maintain compliance so that they are meeting regulatory requirements.

Which sectors does your work specifically relate to?

The benefit of providing such a wide range of H&S services is that we can assist companies in nearly any sector or industry. My specialities lie in, but are not limited to, the engineering sector, manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, aerospace and automotive. Since being in the H&S industry, which is nearly 15 years now sitting as client, regulator and consultant, I have also worked with companies in the retail and finance industries. With such a broad offering of services, Bureau Veritas can support companies in nearly any sector.

How do our services for these different sectors vary?

It is not actually the service that differs from sector to sector, but simply the focus. The principles of the service tend to remain the same, it is the product that we are consulting on that changes. This is a benefit to our clients as our broad services promise convenience and compliance, while also introducing pragmatism, proportionality and consistency.

One thing that remains the same is the confidence that our clients have in Bureau Veritas. Our services provide reassurance that their business is abiding by the law and most importantly that their workplace is a healthy and safe environment.

There can be huge penalties for failure to comply with H&S regulations, what would be a key piece of advice to companies that are at risk of non-compliance?

I think it is important to note that in recent years, financial penalties have increased dramatically. When a company is being investigated, it is not just the nature of the accident that is considered but also the revenue of the company. This can have crippling effects on a company.

Good health and safety management should be at the forefront of every company’s agenda as this ensures that they are compliant with the law. It is also good business practice, helps to prevent legislative breaches and in turn avoiding both financial penalties and reputational damage.  More importantly, good health and safety management gives an employer the confidence that employees and contractors go home healthy and safe at the end of their work day.

How can Bureau Veritas, your team specifically, help businesses to achieve and maintain compliance?

In the H&S team and across all of Bureau Veritas, we offer services that support companies to function correctly. We aid businesses in becoming compliant to the law and where they are not compliant, how they can be. Companies come to Bureau Veritas for help in meeting regulations, and our services help to provide that assurance.

What makes Bureau Veritas unique is that we are a full-service one-stop shop for all H&S services. Our clients may come to us for one service and will find that we can do much more for them.  Our compliance service lines include acoustics and vibration services, through to statutory examinations, building control services and process safety.

Bureau Veritas provides convenience for customers with multiple needs, whether that is health and safety requirements, occupational hygiene requirements or certification services. It is all available at Bureau Veritas, and our scale and expertise allow us to support businesses of any size.
