Graduate Success Story: Jiten Mistry

As part of our series in showcasing the varied careers at Bureau Veritas, we have spoken with Jiten Mistry, a key member in our marketing team. Jiten initially joined Bureau Veritas in 2014 as an intern and was given the opportunity to put theory into practice and evolve his skillset. Jiten shares his story on his transition from intern to his current role and reveals his future aspirations.

Describe your journey as a marketing intern

Whilst I was studying at Leeds Beckett University for my degree in Marketing and Advertising Management, it was recommended that I should apply to Bureau Veritas to carry out my placement year within the marketing department for the exposure opportunities. I was successful during the interview process and I joined the company in 2014 as a marketing intern during my sandwich year before returning to Leeds Beckett University for my final academic year. I was the fourth addition to the marketing department at the time and it was highlighted that there was opportunity to develop within this role.

My initial thoughts of Bureau Veritas were overwhelming as the scale and the success of the business was quite daunting to begin with. I was initially under the impression that Bureau Veritas was simply an engineering and inspection company; it wasn’t until I started working for the company that I soon learned that Bureau Veritas are global leaders in Testing Inspection and Certification (TIC) with a wide portfolio of services.

What was your role and what skills did you gain as an intern?

My aim in joining the business was to implement the theory I had learned, to build a solid foundation within marketing and to progress my skill set.

My duties as a marketing intern included; understanding the marketing mix in a B2B environment, budgets and forecasts, implementation of new a UK intranet, promotion, training and video production with the highlight being a Mobile Application for Inspectors and Auditors (MAIA) video, organising and exhibiting at national trade events, researching and implementing new technology to support the business whilst assisting the sales team. I also had the opportunity to learn about PR and the various digital media channels.

I like to be organised and long-term planning was a big skill that was developed. One of my key roles as an intern was attending and assisting with national exhibitions. I made sure to keep to a timeline for the events that I was running and ensured they were prepared well in advance. Marketing is deadline driven, however I work well under pressure and it helped that I had a great working relationship with my manager and the rest of the team.

How did you re-join Bureau Veritas?

Whilst I was in my final year at University, the marketing manager contacted me with an opportunity at Bureau Veritas. My initial role as a marketing intern soon changed to campaign and events marketing specialist; I moved to the midlands and the rest is history!

Why did you re-join Bureau Veritas?

When I was successful in getting the role, I knew that it was a very exciting career opportunity for me to venture into after completing my final year at university. I was made aware at the very beginning of Bureau Veritas’ SP20 growth plan, the successful expansion of the organisation with continual global acquisitions and the fact that Bureau Veritas was in a strong competitive position within the UK was very appealing.

What does your current role entail?

As the campaign and events marketing specialist for Bureau Veritas, I work closely with the sales team to drive marketing activity in the middle and mass markets. I am responsible for strategically planning and executing all campaigns and events across UK businesses. As a marketing team, we continue to design and innovate our service offering, in order to remain competitive within the TIC marketplace. I support our business units across the country and work closely with internal and external stakeholders to deliver quality and targeted campaigns through various channels of communication. My journey through Bureau Veritas has been a learning curve which has allowed me to continue to grow and develop.

What are your thoughts on the development opportunities at Bureau Veritas?

If you’re willing to put in the work and want to develop your career, Bureau Veritas will fully support career development via training and development programmes. I’m very career focused and I will continue with my business acumen to become a marketing director.
