What made you take the leap and apply for a role at Bureau Veritas?

One of the main reasons I applied for Bureau Veritas is that I was looking for a career change. I wanted to work for a company that would allow me to challenge myself and expand my skill set, and Bureau Veritas seemed like the best place for me to do that. I hadn’t heard a lot about Bureau Veritas when I initially saw the role, but after doing some research I discovered how global they are and the wide variety of services they provide and was impressed. I also saw opportunities for career progression within the company which was something that really appealed to me.

What does your current role entail?

It’s hard to say what my role is day to day as it is so varied; I could spend up to a month on a client’s site providing fixed electrical testing, to spending a few hours doing mechanical testing at another site.  This also means my schedule can change quickly, for example I recently had a call from a client who required an urgent inspection meaning I had to alter my work schedule for the coming weeks in order to provide them with the services they required.

Due to my position as Deputy Manager for Ireland and Scotland, I get the opportunity to work on various jobs and also interact with clients directly to meet their needs and requirements as they arise. Distributing work and providing supporting for my team is also an important part of my role. While this can be quite challenging I feel it is one of my strong skills. I consider myself a people person and enjoy communicating with clients, solving problems and dealing with issues in a prompt and professional manner, which I believe are necessary skills for the role.

What was the moment you knew you’d made the right decision to work here?

I’ve spent nearly six years working at Bureau Veritas now and there have been many moments that have made me glad I took the role. When I started I liked the responsibility of managing the electrical testing of all the hospitals in the Glasgow area, which was challenging at first but I adapted well. Having the opportunity to become a deputy manager is definitely one of my highlights. I enjoy having the responsibility of managing a team and supporting other engineers, as well as interacting with the clients and having a greater input into the work that Bureau Veritas is involved in.

What are you most proud of during your time working for Bureau Veritas?

Not long after I joined the company a quality engineer from the training department recognised the extensive knowledge I had gained from previous experience and felt that other employees would benefit from this. I was added onto a training list where I had the opportunity to help train other engineers, which is something I’m proud of as it happened so soon after I had joined.

As well as progressing into the deputy role, something else I’m proud to say I worked on is a project with a multinational alcoholic beverages company. This involved a lot of organisation and planning between Bureau Veritas and the client to arrange dates when certain electrical lines and machines could be switched off in order for them to be tested. Once this initial challenge was met it was rewarding to see the progress that we’d been working hard to achieve, as well receiving positive feedback from the client.

Describe the prospect for career development at Bureau Veritas.

From my point of view the career development opportunities at Bureau Veritas couldn’t be better! I have been encouraged to take a range of in-house training courses to expand my knowledge and skill set which is really positive. Due to my responsibility as a deputy manager I feel my career is moving in the right direction; I’m more confident and my management skills have certainly developed because of this. I am always eager to contribute to the team and improve our processes so this opportunity was great for me.

The opportunities for development, especially for engineers, are brilliant; we can work with our managers to organise training courses around the client’s needs, which is an important part of our role. There are always new ways to improve and challenge yourself through these courses and personal development programmes, which is really encouraging to see and be part of.
