Bureau Veritas Reiterates the Need to Increase Diversity in STEM Education and Careers

22/06/18

Ahead of this year’s International Women in Engineering Day, Bureau Veritas is reiterating the need to focus on both women and the younger generations to consider careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), as statistics reveal that just 11 per cent of the engineering workforce is female(1).

Kathryn Dolan, Human Resources Director at Bureau Veritas, comments: “We know there is an acute shortage of skilled engineers at all levels, and this trend is set to continue. If we are to close this skills gap, it’s crucial that we encourage both females and young people into STEM careers, which are currently dominated by an aging and traditionally male-dominated workforce. Despite increased promotion and awareness of careers in STEM, the latest statistics disappointingly highlight that there is still significant work to be done to ensure we have the skills and talent we need for the future both within the Testing, Inspection and Certification (TIC) industry and STEM disciplines overall.”

Bureau Veritas is working in partnership with both educational and professional institutions to foster an early passion in STEM subjects and nurture the bright minds of the future, as well as encouraging young girls in particular that they can enjoy a rewarding career in industry, be it in engineering or another discipline. A diverse pool of technical talent, combined with an inclusive culture which allows all individuals to thrive, will place Bureau Veritas at the forefront of driving increased diversity in technical careers, building a pipeline of STEM skills and capability for the future, as well as enhancing business performance overall.

Bureau Veritas is an official partner of the Year of Engineering campaign. For further information please email info@uk.bureauveritas.com.
