SUSTAINABILITY

MAKING YOUR BUSINESS SUSTAINABLE

Organisations which demonstrate a commitment to sustainability can achieve a genuine competitive edge, by gaining the confidence of clients, investors, consumers and the local community.

Under the constant watch of governmental and non-governmental organizations, international brands and retailers need to work with supply chain partners to reduce environmental impacts, sustain controls over the use of toxic chemicals and proactively eliminate these chemicals from the supply chain.

In response to the needs of the global industry to eliminate harmful substances from the supply chain, Bureau Veritas Consumer Products Services have developed a Chemical Discharge Monitoring (CDM) Solution. This solution is designed to help fashion retailers and brands know where they stand with regards to water pollution in their supply chain via a combination of chemical management policies, environmental auditing, water sample testing and reporting.

The service also includes establishing measures for continuous improvement.

INTRODUCING BV3

To complement the Chemical Discharge Monitoring solution, Bureau Veritas has a product called BVE3, BVE3 is a solution that addresses the challenges of how to better understand the hazardous chemical controls of your supply chain. BVE3 additionally enables you to easily identify problem chemicals in support of the elimination of the discharge of hazardous chemicals.

“BVE3 is the only commercial model available that can systematically estimate the discharge scenarios of multiple pollutants for the textile processing industry.”

Key to BVE3 is the measurement and evaluation of the hazardous chemical discharge to support their eradication by 2020.

BVE3 integrated as part of the supply chain sustainability management solution, together with the discharge testing, auditing and raw material & finished product testing services, resulting in transparency, performance measurement, performance monitoring and continuous improvement.

CHEMICALS WHICH ARE OF MOST CONCERN

The following chemicals are listed as the 11 priority chemicals. Chemicals considered as “hazardous” include PBT (persistent bioaccumulative toxic), vPvB (very persistent very bioaccumulative), CMR (carcinogenic mutagenic reproductive-toxic), ED (endocrine disruptor) and other properties of equivalent concerns.

They are potentially dangerous to humans and can damage aquatic life.

Phthalates

Brominated and Chlorinated Flame Retardants

Azo Dyes

Organotin Compounds

Chlorobenzenes

Chlorinated Solvents

Chlorophenols

SCCPs (Short-Chained Chlorinated Paraffins)

Heavy Metals such as lead, cadmium, mercury and chromium VI

APEOs/APs

PFCs (Per Fluorinated Compounds)

ROAD MAP TO ZERO

The Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals (ZDHC) Programme takes a holistic approach to tackling the issue of hazardous chemicals in the global textile, leather and footwear value chain.

The goal is to eliminate the use of priority chemicals by focussing on the following areas:
